Major boom for budding musicians

To the team at DG Music, live music is everything so we are thrilled to hear its future is in safe hands with more children than ever learning to play an instrument.

The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music has been looking at changing trends in music lessons for young people.

The best news to come from its report is that 76% of children now play an instrument compared to just 41% in 1999 - we look forward to recruiting the best of them in a few years from now!

The Making Music report also shows changes in the popularity of different instruments over the last 15 years.

The humble recorder – a key feature of every primary school music lesson in the 80s and 90s – has lost its title as the most popular instrument for young people to learn, being replaced by a budding generation of pianists.

Pop music has also had an impact on children’s interests with the keyboard doubling its popularity from 9% to 20%, the electric guitar rising from 1% to 9% and the bass guitar making a leap from none of the children surveyed in 1999 playing it to 3% of the youngsters questioned today.

See how instruments have changed in popularity over the last 15 years with the percentage of children who played them in 1999 compared to 2014.

Recorder                  9%      22%
