Rocketman - The Critics' Opinion

The new Sir Elton John rock biopic ‘Rocketman’ entered the box office recently and is proving to have the critics divided.

‘Rocketman’, a musical fantasy, covers Sir Elton's early years and follows the transformation from shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight to international superstar Elton John.

Set to Elton John's most notable songs and performed by Taron Egerton, it tells the universally recognisable story of how a small-town boy became one of the most iconic figures in pop culture.

Directed by Dexter Fletcher (who replaced Bryan Singer as director on ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’), ‘Rocketman’ has been called a fantastical account of the singer’s life, rather than a realistic portrayal.

Geoffrey Macnab (The Independent) stated that Fletcher, “uses lavish musical sequences to whisk his way through episodes in Elton John’s life”. Macnab acknowledges that Fletcher does explore some of Elton’s darkest moments but that these are filmed in a ”very flamboyant fashion”.  Variety‘s Peter Debruge agrees, stating that the film, “seems mostly preoccupied with the surface idea of Elton: the outrageous wardrobe, the spectacular showmanship, and his relatively unusual status as an openly gay megastar”.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian awarded the film three stars, stating that Egerton “does a middleweight impersonation” but Robbie Collin (The Telegraph) awarded it five stars, saying there is “no comparison” between it and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’: “Putting the two side by side would be like conducting a taste test between a porterhouse steak smothered in tomato ketchup and a smouldering old shoe someone pulled off a bonfire. After the self-effacing salvage job, Fletcher has stormed back with the real, electrifying deal.”

Rotten Tomatoes gives ‘Rocketman’ a whopping 89%: “It's going to be a long, long time before a rock biopic manages to capture the highs and lows of an artist's lifelike ‘Rocketman,’” compared to its score of 61% for Bohemian Rhapsody: “’Bohemian Rhapsody’ hits a handful of high notes, but as an in-depth look at a beloved band, it offers more of a medley than a true greatest hits collection.”

We would love to know what you think? ‘Rocketman’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ – or both?
