The Rise and Rise of Ariana Grande

Although very much on our radar (Abi met Ariana in 2015 at a ‘Meet and Greet’ in Amsterdam!), Ariana Grande has only recently been accepted as a pop icon here in the UK…

Ariana Grande's name has been slow to hit the UK’s press headlines – unless it was for salacious gossip, but the talent of this young superstar is undeniable and now very much a part of an international consciousness. Today, she is one of the most popular singers and entertainers of the present generation. Her songs and music videos have reached the top of international charts and she has countless devoted fans (#arianators #tiny elephants #theloves,) around the world.

Grande’s career has ranged from Broadway, to sitcom, to RnB, to Pop and back to RnB. Her voice has been compared to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

“A pop princess who can deliver the hits while refusing to settle on any one style or genre,” (Clarisse Loughrey, The Independent)

Grande began her career in 2008 in the Broadway musical ‘13’, before spiralling to fame in the USA playing the role of Cat Valentine in the Nickelodeon television series ‘Victorious’ (2010–2013) and the spinoff ‘Sam & Cat’ (2013–2014). Here in the UK, she remained better known as a kids' TV character rather than a pop superstar for subsequent years.

In 2013, Grande’s first studio album ‘Yours Truly’ entered at the top of the USA’s Record Chart, Billboard 200, (with the lead single, "The Way" debuting in the top 10) but it made less of an impact in the UK.

In 2014, however, Grande's second studio album ‘My Everything’, (entering at number one in the US) charted in the top 10 in 24 other countries - with the lead single "Problem" topping international charts for several weeks.

In 2016, she released her third studio album ‘Dangerous Woman’ which charted at number two in the USA. Its title track debuted at number 10, making Grande the first person in the history of that chart to have the lead singles from each of their first three albums debut within the top 10 in the US.

Her fourth album, ‘Sweetener’ was then released in August 2018 receiving worldwide praise:

“Ariana Grande is no stranger to flawless pop…. The superstar returns with a confident, accomplished, sometimes left-field collection of pop bangers, proving that she's not shy of experimentation...the Florida superstar’s fourth record, is dreamy, defiant and driven by hope,” Douglas Green Wood NME

The most recent album, ‘Thank U, Next,’ which was released in February this year, not only launched at number one of Billboard’s album chart but also saw Grande become the first artist to hold the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 spots (‘7 Rings’ at number one, ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored’ at No. 2 and ‘Thank U, Next’ at number 3)  on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart simultaneously since The Beatles in 1964!

Thus far, this 25 year old has won more than 83 awards including a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for ‘Sweetener' as well as International Female Solo Artist at the 2019 Brit Awards. Her music videos had been viewed more than ten billion times online, and in 2016,  Time’ magazine named Grande one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Today, Brits have clearly taking this young idol to their hearts and it is hard to turn the radio on without hearing an Ariana Grande track, with latest single ‘Monopoly’ receiving the most plays.

We look forward to seeing what’s next! Go Ariana!
