In Remembrance - Hal Blaine

Published: 15 Mar 19, 03:08pm  |  Author: DG Music

Hal Blaine, one of the world’s most famous drummers, died earlier this week at the age of 90.

Blaine’s signature beat influenced generations and can be heard on numerous hits by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Diamond. His drumming is featured on 150 US top 10 hits, 40 of which went to number one, as well as many film and television soundtracks.

The Beach Boys Brian Wilson wrote: “Hal Blaine was such a great musician and friend that I can’t put it into words. Hal taught me a lot, and he had so much to do with our success — he was the greatest drummer ever.”

His family added: “May he rest forever on 2 and 4,” referencing the accented beats that powered so many of his hit recordings over the decades.

Blaine was a key member of the Los Angeles studio musicians who came to be known as “the Wrecking Crew” - a reference to the way this new generation of professional players emerged in the 1960s and supposedly “wrecked” the careers of their predecessors.

Here’s a montage of the drumming legend, containing only about half of his Top 10 hits:

And here are a few more fantastic hits from his 60s heyday:

The Beach Boys, “Good Vibrations” (1966)

Simon & Garfunkel, “A Hazy Shade of Winter” (1966)

The 5th Dimension, “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” (1969)
