Mercury is a professional Ceilidh and Barn Dance Band based in London, who have a wide musical experience and knowledge, and always keep the emphasis firmly on fun!

Emphasis on Fun!

Many Barn Dance Bands are semi-professional, for whom playing barn dances is their only musical experience. Ask them to slip in a bit of Latin jazz, an Italian tarantella or your favourite Macedonian hora, and you'll be met by a sharp intake of breath!

Other bands are very professional and versatile, but sometimes take the whole barn dance thing rather seriously and they might sulk if you accidentally hoe-up instead of hoe-down, or do-si-don't instead of do-si-do!

Mercury is a bit different - the band has a lot of fun with the music, taking it in all sorts of unexpected directions, and expect their audiences to have a lot of fun as well. If you mess up the dancing and end up in a heap on the floor - so much the better!

The Mercury Band has a wealth of performing experience and is perfect for weddings, parties and corporate events.

Besides British, Irish..and American tunes usually associated with barn dances, ..Mercury can draw on a wide range of International styles. If you have a Scottish/Jewish wedding, or Irish/French or English/Russian, then don't despair- you've come to the right place!

The line-up of the band (normally fiddle, accordion, bass and caller) can be tailored to suit your requirements and budget. Other intruments frequently used include drums, guitar and bodhran. Themes covered over the past few years include Irish, Scottish, Wild West, Australian, mediaeval, Italian, French and Gypsy.

MIke - Accordion & Caller

MIke - Accordion & Caller

Mike leads the band and attempts to keep order. He has a strong interest in all sorts of historical dance, and is a specialist in Maypole Dancing (he even has his own maypole and will sell you one if you ever find you're short of one!). He dances with St Albans Morris. Besides doing barn dances, Mike plays sea shanties, French and Italian accordion music, and recently appeared in the feature film "Ladies in Lavender".

Chris - Fiddle

Chris - Fiddle

Chris brings to Mercury his fascination for jazz and East European fiddle. If a polka turns into a Hot Club swing tune, or Turkey in the Straw into a Romanian hora, Chris will be to blame. He has also written many of the band's tunes. Outside of Mercury, he leads the Soviet Swing band The Kremlinaires and gypsy/klezmer trio Tziganarama.

Bernard - Bass

Bernard - Bass

The powerhouse of the band, Bernard, on electric or double bass has been with Mercury since 1987, despite his oft-avowed allergy to accordions. He is in constant demand as a session musician, working with artists such as Sinead O'Connor and June Tabor. He tours the world with the Arab World Music bands Nara and Syriana, and is MD for Rolf Harris.
