DG Music turns 10!

Published: 23 Apr 14, 12:53pm  |  Author: DG Music

DG Music has reached double figures and is celebrating 10 years of matching event organisers with their dream musicians.

What started with director David Graham helping out friends with their wedding plans has gone on to see him create one of the leading music agencies in the country.

As a professional musician, David’s friends often turned to him to help book bands for their weddings or parties, which he juggled alongside his day job as a music teacher at Oakham School.

But in 2004 he made the decision to turn it into a business and DG Music was born. It now has more than 400 artists on the books and a number of exclusive signings.

David said: “Setting up the business was a natural progression from something I was already doing.

“I always get a buzz watching people play high quality live music. When I see someone perform I want to see their musicianship and craftsmanship. I never tire of seeing someone who is really good.”

Having studied music at Manchester University and saxophone at the Royal Northern College of Music, David went on to teach at Oakham School for 10 years.

He is a professional musician who currently performs with Funk Soul Brother and The Jazz Rats. He is a wedding pianist and was also saxophonist, guitarist and pianist with the 70s pop group Showaddywaddy from 2009-2011.

David runs the business with his wife Belinda, who shares his passion for music and is often seen performing locally with Rutland Musical Theatre.

And it’s their passion for quality which set the company motto – “The best musicians. The best advice.”

He said: “People often don’t notice when music is bad, but when it’s amazing they do and that’s what we want to achieve.”

DG Music’s list of artists spans every imaginable genre of music – party bands, jazz, rock n roll and classical musicians are among the most popular requests but the list covers everything from ska and reggae to flamenco and bagpipes.

One of the company’s biggest success stories is The Houndogs. The Lincolnshire-based band is managed exclusively by DG Music and has become widely recognised as one of the UK’s top rockabilly bands.

Rutland band Funk Soul Brother, which features David himself on the saxophone, is also one of the company’s exclusive acts along with The Atlantics and The Supernovas.

These and DG Music’s many other artists are available to hire for a whole range of events – weddings, anniversaries, corporate days and even funerals are all occasions which can be enhanced by the presence of the right live musician.

And thanks to David and his team, choosing that right musician has never been easier.

Since he first launched the business with his wife Belinda from a spare room at their home in Oakham, David has made huge improvements to the website. At the click of a button you can browse the artists by genre or location, check their availability and pricing and listen to them perform.

But there is also advice at the end of the phone.

David said: ‘“Searching on-line for a band to hire can be a frustrating process so we’ve tried to improve that, but there are also people behind our website and we want people to pick up the phone or come in to meet us to make sure we provide exactly what they want.

“Our emphasis is on good customer service.”

DG Music also provides a range of magicians and street entertainers along with professional sound and lighting equipment for events.

Over the years the team has provided musicians for events right across the UK and even sent acts abroad to perform in Canada and Germany. Our acts have also perfofrmed at venues including Blenheim Palace, The Dorchester in London and the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

We have been involved with big events like the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and our musicians have performed for companies such as Mars, Nokia, Ladbrookes, the RAF and The Prince's Trust.

Locally DG Music has been associated with events such as Oakham Festival, Rutland Day, regular fashion shows at Cavells in Oakham and events at Oakham School. We also work closely with local venues such as Barnsdale Hall Hotel, Barnsdale Lodge, Belvoir Castle, Hambleton Hall and Burghley House.

The future for DG Music is to continue offering top quality musicians and advice, but David is also branching out into DG Events. This extension of the business offers customers a total events package, with everything from the venue and entertainment to catering and project management.

The DG Music team, which is now based next to Hambleton Bakery in Gaol Street, Oakham, is also planning a Summer Party to mark the anniversary. The details are:

* Date: Sunday June 29

* Time: 4pm - 9.30pm

* Venue: Oakham Castle

* Confirmed acts: Funk Soul Brother, The Houndogs, The Atlantics, Govannen, Calder McLaughlin and Monroe.
