Lifting the lid on classical music for your event

Classical music goes hand in hand with weddings but it’s something many people know very little about until it comes to planning their big day.

Even the most dedicated pop and rock fans can find themselves turning to the likes of Bach and Beethoven to provide the soundtrack for their big day, despite their knowledge of the latter being limited to the big dog with a string of hit movies.

But choosing classical music for wedings doesn’t have to be a daunting experience and it doesn’t mean you have to leave your usual musical tastes at the church door.

We have a fantastic range of musicians for weddings and singers for hire who can help you bridge the gap between your own musical preferences and the classical instruments you crave to create an elegant touch to your big day.

A popular choice with many couples is to hire a string quartet as they are versatile musicians who can slot into any part of the day, from the arrival of the guests and entrance of the bride to providing background music during the drinks reception and photographs.

Popular classical requests for a string quartet include Canon in D by Pachelbel, Air on a G String by Bach and The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba by Handel. These are very traditional wedding tunes and a good choice if you want a classical piece but don’t really know what.

Don’t be afraid to ask your chosen musicians for their advice though. They will have played at plenty of weddings before yours and might just come up with a dream song you’d never considered.

A string quartet can also bridge the gap between classical and modern by performing a recent pop song on their traditional instruments. It’s a great compromise for couples who want the wow factor of a classical musician but don’t have a passion for more traditional compositions.

The same goes for harpists, pianists, guitarists and our selection of female wedding singers. Their repertoires span many decades and genres, and many of our musicians will be happy to learn special requests if you have a very specific or unusual requirement.

One of the most traditional musical choices is to hire an organist for weddings. Often a church will have a resident organist who can perform at your ceremony. This is a perfectly acceptable choice but some may have a limited repertoire, so it might be worth considering a professional musician who can offer a wider choice.

As with the other musicians, an organist can stick to traditional classical pieces if you prefer, or use their skills to adapt a modern piece.

The main thing to remember when you’re considering classical musicians for your wedding is their versatility. Many of them really can turn their hand to anything.

So set aside your fears and don’t worry if you don’t know your Schubert from your Strauss. Help is at hand.
