The Jive Aces are one of the hardest-working bands in show business today, performing over 300 shows a year in so far over 25 different countries. They have appeared on literally hundreds of TV and radio shows all over the world.
They deliver an energetic yet highly polished performance and their unique sound comes from a combination of their own original tunes in true swing style as well as fresh arrangements of songs from the swing era. Classics made famous by such greats as Louis Prima (Just a Gigolo), Louis Jordan (Five Guys Named Mo), Cab Calloway (Minnie the Moocher), Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong.
The Jive Aces are...
Ian was born in the Liverpool area and lived only a few doors away from Paul McCartney’s brother. He then moved to Essex and London, hence his current accent. Ian’s cool singing style, hot trumpet and hip showmanship put him centre stage as the front man and he pulls it off with ease in a style reminiscent of Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima and Dean Martin all rolled into one.
Big John is often asked if he is Spanish, Mexican, Brazilian, Colombian, Puerto Rican and many other nationalities. He is in fact a Maori, born in Auckland, New Zealand. Big John’s hot solos are an integral part of the Jive Aces sound.
When the Jive Aces heard Louis Prima’s band they knew they had to have a trombone player and it was Alex Douglas who got the call. Alex is quite a showman and at concerts will jump on top of anyone’s table to blow a solo! He often challenges trumpeter Ian Clarkson to a duel of horns and then the sparks really fly!
Vince’s pumping piano style and wild showmanship have been compared to Jerry Lee Lewis and he puts so much energy into his performance that his feet frequently leave the ground!
Ken is known for spinning the bass, throwing it above his head and even climbing on it while playing, much to the amazement of the audience.
Pete learned the art of swing drumming playing along to the records of Count Basie and Duke Ellington. His all-time favourite musician and entertainer is Louis Armstrong who he will talk about for hours given the chance. His style of swing drumming is unique and drives the band along like a steam-powered locomotive.
