Ska & Reggae Bands in Leicestershire
The rise of ska and reggae music in the Leicestershire coincided with the increase in the number of West Indian immigrants in the 1960s and 1970s, but how did this musical genre originally come about?
Ska music originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and was one of the original musical styles which led towards the introduction of reggae around a decade later. Ska combined elements of traditional Jamaican music, including calypso with the American jazz and R&B sounds. The second wave or revival of ska in the late 1970s in Britain became known as the ‘2 Tone’ movement.
Reggae, as a style which evolved through ska and rocksteady, again has its roots in traditional Jamaican music and became popular in the 70s and 80s in Britain thanks to bands such as UB40, who brought the music to a new audience in Europe and still continue to do so today. One of the best-known reggae artists, who made the genre go supersonic, was Bob Marley, an undeniable worldwide superstar who took reggae into the mainstream.
