Rutland Concert Band prepares for first European tour

Published: 27 May 14, 10:27am  |  Author: DG Music

A community band is preparing for a busy summer season which will include its first ever European tour.

The Rutland Concert Band has been entertaining crowds in and around its home county since 2008, but in August the band will set off to Belgium for a weekend of performances to an international crowd.

Band chairman Anne Mortimer says it will be a big milestone in the band’s history.

The band was set up to give wind, brass and percussion players of all ages and abilities the chance to perform as a group. It is open to players of all levels – from beginners to musicians who are returning to their instruments after many years.

They perform around three or four concerts locally each year, the next of which is taking place in Oakham next month.

On Sunday June 28 the band will gather at the bandstand in Cutts Close for Proms in the Park – an event hosted in conjunction with Oakham Town Council to mark Armed Forces Day and raise money for Help for Heroes.

Guest vocalist Caroline Trutz will appear alongside the band in the free public event. Come along and bring your picnics, flags and fine voices.

The band will then perform in Melton in August before setting off on their weekend tour of Belgium. They will perform in Ostend and Bruges before taking part in the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate.

Anne said: “Our repertoire is selected with audience appreciation in mind – from popular light classical pieces to film, show and TV themes.

“Our aim aim is to have fun playing and enjoy socialising as a musician.”

The band rehearses on Tuesdays from 7.30pm until 9pm at Oakham School music studio off Ashwell Road. The cost is £2 for adults and £1 for students.

To book the Rutland Concert Band for your event, or to join them as a musician, contact Anne Mortimer at Music and More, Oakham, on 01572 756578 or email rutlandconcertband@gmail.com
