The Magic of Motown

Published: 9 Jul 13, 03:57pm  |  Author: DG Music

In 1959, above a door in Detroit there was a sign declaring that office to be “Hitsville U.S.A”. Motown Records’ founder, Berry Gordy, was responsible for the sign and much, much more…

Gordy set up Motown Records under the gentle persuasion of a young Smokey Robinson. The Miracles singer wrote, produced and sang many of Motown’s biggest hits including the labels’ first smash “Shop Around”. This was just the start of Motown madness as the following years saw the rise of Stevie Wonder (discovered aged 11!), The Temptations, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Marvin Gaye and The Jackson 5.

Gordy’s experience of working in a car factory is said to have influenced the way he managed musicians and made them into Motown stars: begin by creating a great product, make another similar one and do it fast. The truth of this is hard to verify as fact and fictional tend to overlap over time! However, what is for certain is that Motown sounded great then and still does now. Why is this, what is the magic of Motown?

Clapping hands and soulful vocals with playful interaction between the lead singer and backing vocalists is reminiscent of Gospel music and defines the Motown Sound. Horns, tambourines and string sections arranged into melodic harmonies set Motown hits like ‘Heat Wave’ and ‘My Girl’ apart from other pop songs. These songs were instants hit and remain so popular because they make you want to move ‘n groove, sing along, smile… listening to Motown music feels good! This is exactly how Funk Soul Brother make you feel as they bring the Motown sound right up to date with their unrivalled depth of musical knowledge and passion for all things funk!

Motown Magic is a contemporary Motown band keeping the infectious power of great music alive when they cover hits like Marvin Gaye’s ‘Can I Get A Witness’ and songs by Martha and the Vandellas. Live music always sounds better than recorded tracks because there is something magically about witnessing a performance in real time, which is why bands like Motown Magic and Soul Sister are invaluable.
